Knoppix. Useful for file recovery? [Archive]- PC World Forums .

*i*m*g*I had a problem with a hard drive Seagate 300gb barracuda ide, which was my main boot drive (WinXp), but suddenly decided to stop booting. (Power supply problem, since fixed). So I used an alternative boot, whence Xp then decided it could see the disk OK but that it wasn't formatted and asked if I wanted to format it now. I didn't.I did a bit of investigation on how to recover some important files from the disk. I had these were backed up, but not the most recent versions. The only file recovery utilities I tried were File Scavenger ($49US) and TestDisk (free). These had no trouble at all in seeing and recovering the relevant files, and it seems they could do so with most or all of the other files on the disk.So I don't now have a boot problem and I don't have a lost file problem.

Just a fair amount of wasted time.Getting on to KNOPPIX, which is the main reason for this post. I understood Knoppix could also be used for disk repair/file recovery. So I downloaded the most recent Knoppix version, burnt it to a CD, booted from the CD OK and checked all 3 hard disks in that computer. The boot disk (Seagate 160gb) was OK, the WD 120gb was OK. Knoppix could see that the 300gb Seagate existed (it was plugged in with an IDE cable) but couldn't do anything with it, in particular couldn't see or recover any files. It gave error messages Could not mount device and Mount: I could not determine the file system type, and none was specified. So, I have 2 questions on which I'd love to get some feedback.1. Is there a way where one can specify to Knoppix what file system it's looking at?2. For file recovery, is there use in using Knoppix at all, since there are other utilities that seem to easily do the job that Knoppix didn't? After all, it did take up time (often in short supply) for no result. And please, I don't want to start a dispute on the merits or demerits of Knoppix.

All I want is info on best ways to handle file recovery problems.knoppix can read most formats NTFS included. Example here is a snapshot (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/snapshot11218154053.png) From knoppix reading a NTFS customers XP drive that Windows cant open or see. I know its NTFS because I only installed this OS a few months ago. What you may need to do is Right click the drive(s) you want to recover data from as well as the drive you want to recover the data to, select Change Read/Write mode - Yes, then locate copy/paste the files you want to the other drive. From the link in Post #2Knoppix has native NTFS (read) support, and also has captive support for NTFS write. This uses the real XP drivers to handle this - but requires the XP partition to be accessable. If you have a dead XP install, you are out of luck. So your old drive may be the problem, but as mentioned the customers one I pictured above - windows doesn't even see anything, only a blank unpartitioned driveThanx for feedback.1. re Knoppix not reading NT file system, I understand that recent versions can, and can also write to it.

However, not much point in doing anything about the write option if I can't use Knoppix to read ntfs. Why it doesn't is my current problem.2. Ubuntu and Puppy may be useful suggestions, but is there some reason to suppose they would see the files that Knoppix won't? I have other ways of getting to the files, but do want to know why Knoppix won't do so.3. Clicking the drive I want to copy files from just gives the error message that Knoppix can't determine the file system and can't mount the disk. Is there a way of telling Knoppix what the file system is?

Where from here? :confused:Knoppix Can read a NTFS file system usually, as I pictured that's a drive that windows cant even see the partition on. (drive was slaved)I did have knoppix fail once, that was when the drive had changed to RAW, then none of the other Linux distro's I tried, Ubuntu, or puppy could see anything either. At that time I had to use a windows based data recovery program that could see through the RAW format. With the disk in question, when you right click it on a working machine within windows, what does it say under Properties / File system ?Gary67,That's TestDisk. It was one of the ones I tried, as in my opening post.Yes, it can recover files with RAW format, but for a 300gb it's very slow, and (at least in the time I spent on it) didn't give me the file names or directories they came from. It was on the face of it going to a long job sorting out which file is which. It seems File Scavenger can do the job much faster and more conveniently, and I'm still investigating a couple of others.Probably I'll reformat the disk eventually, but only when I've got everything I want from it.Another data recovery program I use is get Data Back (http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm) - it will read a Drive that's showing as RAW, it will also display the results in the windows explorer format, for example you would open the Search results - drive, Documents and Settings /your user name/ My Documents or Desktop etc. Example of recovery Tree (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/Recovery.jpg). Note: that drive showed as RAW in windows on a working PC.If the drive is 300Gb you have to remember that the recovery programs dont know what you want to search for so they will scan the whole drive, you can tell get data back to search from sector XXXXX to XXXXXXx with X being a number you put in, BUT you have to know what the sectors are you want.Generally a large drive is easy, you set it going and leave it over night, the next morning its done. Once done you can save the search and reload it in about 2 minutes if needed again. The drive shown above is a 80Gb, and took about 3 1/2 hours from memory to do the original scan, and 2 minutes to reload the results tonight for this post (screen shot)Get Data Back is not free, but it does a great job, the picture above is of another customers drive that Linux rolled over and played dead with.

I have erased the customers names in that pic but you get the idea, and it will allow you to try first then if you want the data you pay for the license code.

GetDataBack Review 2016 | Hard Drive Recovery Software .

*i*m*g*GetDataBack Simple from Runtime Software provides a very systematic approach in disk recovery software. It boasts one of the easiest interface we’ve seen because the splash screen shows you the physical devices attached to your computer. The downside of this approach is that the physical devices are listed by size, so you may not be sure which one is the drive you’re looking for. This can be particularly challenging if you have several similarly sized disks, such as a RAID configuration. If RAID recovery happens to be your issue, Runtime does have RAID Recovery for Windows available on as an add-on to the software. This version, GetDataBack Simple, is great for scanning flash drives or doing an external hard drive recovery. The initial scan starts when you select the desired device. This scan is just a cursory event that identifies the file system, logical partitions on the device and their size, along with a deep scan option labeled Sophistication. This scan finds other partitions that may have been overwritten or otherwise lost.Selecting a partition takes you directly to another scan that recovers the available file table.

A feature here that appears unique to GetDataBack is that if there are multiple partitions available, you can switch between them and their file tables without having to wait too long for results. It should be noted that these results are just file tables and available files. The actual recovery hasn’t even started. What GetDataBack Simple is doing is having you guide it to exactly where your files should be stored. Among other things, the software appears to work directly with Windows’ own journaling feature and your hard drive’s P-list table – which is the drive’s internal list of post-production bad blocks found in factory testing. This process-of-elimination recovery strategy is remarkably direct. We tested GetDataBack Simple by asking it to recover files from several different types of data loss across a variety of devices. Below are the results we saw in our testing.

We looked specifically at recovering lost files, overwritten files and reformatted files.Lost File RecoveryGetDataBack Simple recovered all of the lost files stored on our hard disk drive (HDD) and found almost all of the pictures stored on the external solid-state drive (SSD). Between the two, the software found all of our video, audio and MS Office files. Curiously, it found none of those same files on the microSD card.We did try rescanning the FAT32 formatted microSD card on the recommended alternative, GetDataBack for FAT, but our results were the same and we were unable to recover any data from the card.Overwritten File RecoveryThough the overwritten file recovery results not the lowest we saw, they were at and below average among the software we tested. Its recovery rate landed right at 9% for our NTFS formatted hard disk drive (HDD), but fell to 4% on our NTFS formatted solid-state drive (SSD). It was recommended that we try GetDataBack for NTFS for recovering these devices however, the results were worse when we tried.Files Recovered from Reformatted DriveGetDataBack Simple was not able to find our reformatted files on any of our test devices. Neither were GetDataBack for FAT nor GetDataBack for NTFS able to recover these files– both of which are available as add-ons to GetDataBack Simple.

These results are somewhat counter to earlier tests that recovered this level of data loss however those results were just 0.13% of the same SSD tested here and 1.35% of the same HDD.

PayPal Integratiuon, testing using sandbox, altern... - Authorize.Net Developer Community .

Standard file recovery features | Data Recovery Software... Getdataback Error errorAs a refresher, I'm integrating PayPal into my ANET Software. Wrote the XML Request, Response, Error XSD files to code against. So all my XML works correctly now. I can send a request to the developer endpoint Receive a Response, and parse it.

In ANET Sandbox test mode, I get response Code 2, error 35. I'm told that my PayPal sandbox account is not really processing the transaction, so ANET just sends me a 35 code. In ANET live mode, I don't have a valid PayPal account. So I created a real PayPal Business account for my company. I get cookies are not enabled, and a bunch of other junk, so the accounts don't line up. In the ANET Sandbox, I wasn't able to reset the PayPal account, so I disabled it. Now I can't enable it again, so I created another sandbox account. So now the Questions: How are you guys doing this?, the testing part.

I don't really need to confirm 100% operation at the moment, I just have no clue what to do after PayPal sends the customer back to the success URL. Do I just assume that if the customer is sent back, the transaction was blessed or approved. Do I have to ask PayPal or ANET if the transaction was good, via XML. I have to record the order as being paid by PayPal, and at least get the reference ID back for later use. I'd like to get the token or approval code back as well.I think I got it backwrds now.On the first sandbox, was in test mode. With the 2nd sandbox, I'm in live mode with the error 35.I remember now reading the PDF and it saying that test mode only validates the Credentials. So in live mode, I get the error 35, Call merchant support which I understand. So how are other developers actually completing integration? using the PayPal Sandbox which is not able to pass a transaction back to ANET, or do have it all wrong, and I have no clue on how to setup both sides.I did read some other posts on Stack Overflow that says I gave up on the sandbox, and used real accounts to finish writing codePlus I'm trying to figure out how to get data back from PayPal, perhaps there posting text to an iput elemet that I'm suppose to create, or this ANET feature is a mini version of some other PayPal flow, and I should just read up on that.Just looking for a point in the right direction here.

Microsoft Vista does not recognize it anymore. Will setting the drive as a slave drive be able for me to recover the files inside work?

Can I use GetDataBack help me out? Is there any alternative way to retrieve my files without freezing it or sending it to a File Recovery Group?Best Answer: ¶ a dropped drive = a dead drive 99.x% of the time.new drives cannot even be bumped while running and even a light tap on a powered off drive can still send it to the HDD Black hole of damaged disksnever hit an HDD for any reason unless you are absolutely sure that you have all your data backed up and are ready to dispose of the disk by destruction when recycling used PCsa lot of new drives also have what's called a Fluid Dynamic Bearing and freezing the drive could result in more damage as the platters will not spin correctly causing head crashes all over the disksplitting the enclosure and installing the disk into a PC and running HDD diagnostics tools against it will tell you how damaged it is.you can try GetDataBack or other tools, such as SpinRite by Steve Gibson (@ Gibson Research Corp. etc.some basic free tools are Seatools for Seagate, Maxtor disks with support for basic operations on all disks it can find identify, but if it just clicks and chirps like bunch of crickets birds you may not be able to retrieve anything from it, with out using professional data recovery services.Get everything else set up ready to copy the files first. Try hitting the drive LIGHTLY sideways onto the table, or tapping it with the plastic handle of a large screwdriver. Tap it on the side, or even lightly on the top. Sometimes this will loosen up a jammed or worn drive enough to get it running for one more pass.If that don't work try heating it up with a hair drier. Don't get it hot, just warm. The expansion from heat may loosen it up.If that don't work, throw in in the fridge for a couple hours. When you pull it out don't plug it in yet.

Condensation will form on the drive fry it. Heat it up to room temp with the hair drier try it.If it don't work try tapping it again like before, get it really warm with the drier while tapping it.Once it's running immediately save all your data off it because it may only be good this time only.I've saved all data on 4 out of 4 dead drives over the years using the above methods. 1 was only good to save all the data once. The other 3 drives continued to work but clicked occasionally so I didn't trust them anymore.

*i*m*g*We are having problems with RExcel and I am trying to find alternatives. Our users like to use Excel and our developers like to do stats in R. So, we use Excel as a front end for data entry, analyze in R, and present results in Excel.Because of the problems we are having with RExcel, however, I would really like to have a different solution. Assuming that we cannot remove Excel or R from the equation, are there other ways of connecting them besides RExcel? My searching on the internet has not been helpful.[edit]I've been asked to phrase this as a problem that SO can solve. I need to take data input in Excel, pass it to R, and get data back.

RExcel is not allowed and the transfer needs to be transparent to the user. How do I do this?

HDD GURU FORUMS • Best data recovery software for MS Windows systems : Software and hardware tools .

*i*m*g*Hi,I'm looking for the best data/HDD recovery software that works on MS Windows systems and can restore recenly deleted files as well as files from thoroughly formatted drives, lost partitions and such. I know that's not always possible, but what software would be the best pick in your opinion? What would be your opinion on those:UFS Explorer VS Stellar Phoenix VS RecuvaA little off-topic: how is with data recovery from the SSD? Is it possible, can the same software be used?Thank you for sharing your wisdom in advance!fzabkar wrote:ISTM that DMDE is very powerful, but it's user interface isn't the easiest to understand. One good thing about it is that, when you perform an NTFS search, you can stop at any point, test the recovered file/directory tree, and then continue the search if you don't see your files. This minimises the stress on the drive, which is particularly important when the drive has bad sectors. If the drive has bad sectors it should be cloned first using ddrescue. Actually it should always be cloned first before scanning IMHO.+1 for R-studio and GDB. UFSExploder is good for some of the odd filesystem's like HFS, but is annoying and crashes all the time. Not much use for just NTFS and FAT filesystems.data-medics wrote:If the drive has bad sectors it should be cloned first using ddrescue.

Actually it should always be cloned first before scanning IMHO.There was a recent thread at Tom's Hardware where a user wished to recover a single 2.5GB file from a drive with serious physical problems. I gave him the choice of ddrescue-ing the entire drive, or using DMDE to scan the first 3 or 4GB to recover his directory tree. He chose the first option, but it appears that the alternative may have been better. BTW, DMDE allows the user to specify the number of sectors to skip after a error, and to set the number of retries.

GetDataBack for FAT - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com .

*i*m*g*Accidentally deleted your files? GetDataBack Data Recovery can track them down--for a price. It even works with corrupted drives and those not recognized by Windows. This version only recovers files from FAT drives, but it does offer a search tool for quickly locating a file by its date, name, or size.If you suspect your actual disk is about to bite the dust, you can create a drive image to use during recovery getdataback alternative. The utility can't make rescue discs, however, so if you want to do that, you'll need to build yourself a bootable Windows PE disc and add GetDataBack Data Recovery to it--the publisher's Web site has instructions.Although the application proves quite adept at locating deleted files, and you can view their contents, the demo won't recover them.

We can't vouch for how well this core feature works. GetDataBack Data Recovery seems worth trying, but if you actually want to recover any lost work, this demo won't do you much good. From Runtime Software:GetDataBack Data Recovery is a highly advanced data recovery software that will help you get your data back when your drive's partition table, boot record, or FAT/MFT or root directory is corrupt, a virus has hit the drive when files are deleted or when the drive is struck by a power failure. The software can even recover your data when the drive is no longer recognized by the operating system or when all directory information is lost. Advanced algorithms will make sure all directories and subdirectories are put together as they were, and that long filenames are reconstructed correctly. GetDataBack Data Recovery is safe because it's read-only, which means the program will never attempt to write to the drive you are about to recover.5 starsa Monkey can run this.June 03, 2009|By mrgato|Version: GetDataBack for FAT 3.69ProsMy grandmother with no comp experience can recover my damaged HD.It is unbielevable..i have 12 comp that didnt work, memories lost...but guess what..their not.Consstill looking, i actually called GetBack Data and they gave me a discount even more when i purchased a bundleSummarycan't go wrong, one HD was not damaged by virus or fortmated..but physycaly droped...and i still got 80% of my fotos...It works great..also FAT and Explarer and other free stuff they have on their site..Customer service is great..email or phone. *i*m*g*Click to expand...I agree, there are compnaies that specialise in recovering hard drive data. If its really importent to you, you should send your drive to make them find everything you lost.Second, it is risky to keep al your data in one hard drive. I do so too and nearly got a heart attack when my WD fell on the floor today. Surprisingly it still works fine, but I reinforced the corners and edges with white elastic rubber (from south africa). Thank god it was in the WD black bag (which doesnt protect against shocks, its as thin as a handkerchief) the plastic doesn't have a scratch.Yes if I do ever get my files back I will be keeping my backups in at least 2 places! So far the DIY method's not looking good... TestDisk says both the MFT and MFT mirror are bad.

Chkdsk /r obviously doesn't work. I'm running GetDataBack but it's still going and so far is giving me all errors with 3-4 hours still left to go and at sector 10000000. Error 2 in E: during ReadLogicalLBA [...] I guess I'll leave it overnight and see if it there is something that doesn't get an error in the morningVery strange though that one day the MFT is there and files look recoverable, yet the very next day the MFT is screwed up and so far looks like my data is too...Wish me luck.In theory TestDisk can repair the MFT... and GetDataBack - I hope you are not recovering data to the same drive because in that case all you do is breaking it even more....I don't want to sound rude - but from this thread it seems you have a problem find any tool you find at it and complain how it doesn't work. And if you continue like that you will not get anywhere.Logical steps would have been:1) Problem occurred - shut down HDD2) Post problem on say NBR research3) Buy another HDD or make space available off the HDD4) attempt recoveryAlternative:At 2) send off to a specialized company. At the moment I have a feeling you are best off sending it off to a data recovery company and have them recover the data.In theory TestDisk can repair the MFT... and GetDataBack - I hope you are not recovering data to the same drive because in that case all you do is breaking it even more....I don't want to sound rude - but from this thread it seems you have a problem find any tool you find at it and complain how it doesn't work. And if you continue like that you will not get anywhere.Logical steps would have been:1) Problem occurred - shut down HDD2) Post problem on say NBR research3) Buy another HDD or make space available off the HDD4) attempt recoveryAlternative:At 2) send off to a specialized company. At the moment I have a feeling you are best off sending it off to a data recovery company and have them recover the data.Click to expand...I am not recovering anything to the same drive as it was broken and I couldn't if I wanted to - I do also realize this is a very bad idea. When I found the problem with the HDD I immediately started doing some research on how to fix the problem. I saw many people having the same outer symptom of Windows showing the drive being unformatted, many other symptoms of which were the same or similar to mine. TestDisk was the most recommended tool which seemed to fix many people's issues. I ran the analysis/partition table repair option to see it had no effect (but did not damage my data...at least at the time). At this point I posted the problem here on NBR and on the Microsoft Answers place where to this point I still haven't received a response. Through the responses here on NBR though I decided to give a recovery attempt with software a try (that is GetDataBack) which obviously didn't go too well.As you mentioned unfortunately it does look like the best option is to send the HDD off to the pros to recover the data.

In the morning I will be evaluating whether or not the data is actually worth the fee for recovering the data (monetarily, not so much, but personally quite important/necessary). Whatever way I go, I will be purchasing a new external hard drive when I can. If I get the data back through the pros I will most likely use both drives for redundant backups. If it's not worth the price in the end I will begin new backups on the new HDD and keep the unrecovered HDD for a little while in case something comes up though. In fact the current HDD is a few years old and I suspect given that I purchased it from a small local vendor here in Beijing, it is not very reliable anyway.I do appreciate the help you and everyone else has provided in this threadP.S. looking into the future, could I get your opinions on a good external hard drive to purchase?

Probably about 250GB or 320 max and preferably sub-$100. Of course it should be reliable and portable (so most likely 2.5). Are HDDs in external enclosures generally less reliable than external hard drives marketed for that use (e.g. the Seagate FreeAgent Go)? Alternatively would it be better to purchase 2 lesser-quality or capacity cheaper drives for a total of at least 2 or ideally 3 backup HDDs? Or should I also look into other solutions such as online backup (speed concerns due to low internet speed here)? Thanks again!I am not recovering anything to the same drive as it was broken and I couldn't if I wanted to - I do also realize this is a very bad idea. When I found the problem with the HDD I immediately started doing some research on how to fix the problem.
