You’ve missed these previous posts? Well, it’s never too late to check them out.Part I is herePart II is hereOh, and here’s a little 3D Tidbit hereTo quickly review, by photographing two slightly offset images we were able to create a “left-eye” and “right-eye” view of our scene. By combining these two images we create the illusion of 3D depth. Once combined we can create several viewing options including anaglyph, polarized and free viewing. These options can be viewed and calibrated on YouTube.Each snapshot is at a slightly different angleNow that we know how to shoot and view 3D, it’s time to create our 3D viewable projects.Now before I begin there are numerous apps and software plug-ins available online and for purchase that can automatically combine and adjust your two offset images as well as extrapolate a single image into viewable 3D projects.

Since these solutions are just a quick Google search away, I will leave that part up to you. Instead I want to show you how to use simple graphic and video editing programs such as Adobe’s Photoshop and Premier to convert your media to 3D. I’m assuming you have a basic understanding of both programs. If not you can find basic tutorials on the Adobe website.Let’s begin converting our two “apples” images into an anaglyph 3D image. I’ll be using the “Red/Cyan” anaglyph method, which means I’ll need to wear my “Red/Cyan” 3D glasses.TA-DA! I’m styling’, huh?OK, first I’m going to open Photoshop.

I’m using Photoshop CS5 on a MAC by the way, but you can do this in almost any version of Photoshop and on a Windows PC. If you want to follow along, feel free by clicking on the above “apples” images and downloading them to your computer.I’ll place both my “Left” and “Right” images on separate layers. Make sure you label them so you can keep track of what is what. I’ll also put my “Left” layer on top of my “Right” layer.Select the bottom “Right” layer and then by right clicking on the layer, select Blending Options under the pop up menu. You may want to turn off the eyeball for the above ”Left” layer so you can see the currently selected “Right” layer.The Layer Style dialogue box opens up.

This box gives you all sorts of options to affect your layer such as adding drop shadows or glows. We’re just going to be interested in the Blending Options Default menu item. Select it if it’s not already.Under the Advanced Blending section de-select the “R” channel checkbox. This instantly removes all the red-color from the layer turning it into a blue or cyan tinted image.Click OK to close the Layer Style dialogue box.Now turn back on the eyeball for the “Left ” layer. Right click the layer and select Blending Options just as we did for the previous “Right” layer.This time we’ll be de-selecting both the “G” and “B” channel checkboxes. You should now see that very familiar looking “Red/Cyan” anaglyph image.Click OK to close the Layer Style dialogue box.Using your “Red/Cyan” glasses and your keyboard arrow keys, select the move tool and try nudging the top “Left” layer slightly side to side or up and down to refine the depth of the image.After you got a satisfactory image, crop out the non-overlapping edges of the image and then save out your project to any format you want.There you go, an anaglyph image of the “ apples” in all of its 3D glory.You can also create the same anaglyph effect by using a Levels filter and the Blending Modes.The trick is to apply a Levels Adjustment under the image menu for each layer.Make sure you adjust the Red black input level to the far right for the “Right” layer and the Blue and Green black input levels to the far right for the “Left” layer.Then by using the Blending Mode drop down menu change the “Left” layer mode to Screen. This produces the exact same effect as the Blending Options Layer Styles method.With Photoshop you can create any type of anaglyph image. And by using Photoshop’s animation tools you can even create anaglyph 3D movies.To create non-photo 3D graphics, design your graphic, duplicate the layer to create two layers (a “Left” and “Right” view), and then follow the steps above.By using this process you can create 3D designs for websites, print pieces, flash animations and just about anything else that you can think of.

How’s that for getting the customer’s attention?Now let’s talk video. And more specifically, how do we prepare our video for upload to YouTube? Well, as discussed we can use Photoshop, but that could get a little complicated especially if you plan on editing video. Instead, I’ll be using Adobe Premier.

You can also use other popular video editing software such as Apple’s Final Cut Pro or Avid Media Composer.First we’re going to need to line up our two “Left-Eye”/”Right Eye” images much like we did in Photoshop. So we’re going to need to create a temporary anaglyph 3D viewable image. Again you can use the “apples” images to follow along. Even though these images aren’t video they will import into Premier as clips just the same.We’ll start by creating a sequence and putting our “Right Camera” clip on video channel one and our “Left Camera” clip on video channel two. If our clips are video we’ll need to be sure they are exactly synced up to the frame. You can use a visual or audio cue such as a slate or handclap.

In my case I’ll be using time code to sync my clips.I’ll be applying the color balance (RGB) effect to each layer. You’ll find this effect under the Effects window inside the Video Effects Folder and under Image Control Folder. Just drag the color balance (RGB) effect icon onto each layer.Click the “Left Camera” layer to access the Effect Controls for that layer. Twirl down the Color Balance Effect and drag the Green and Blue color balance sliders all the way to left until they reach zero. This creates our Red Channel.Click on the “Right Camera” clip to access that layer’s Effect Controls drag the Red color balance slider all the way to the left until it reaches zero how to make 3d anaglyph images in photoshop cs5. This creates our Cyan Channel.Click back to the top “Left Camera” layer and twirl down the opacity effect under the effect window. Change the blend mode drop down menu to screen.Voila, you’ve got yourself a 3D anaglyph image to play with. Use your ”Red/Cyan” glasses to move your layers’ positions around to get the ideal depth.

You may need to slightly scale up the layers to crop any non-overlapping edges.Ok, now that we have our clips synced and lined up we need to optimize our video for YouTube upload. Turn off the color balance effects on both layers by clicking on the fx checkbox to the right of the effect. Also, change the opacity blend mode back to normal on the “Left Camera” layer.Without moving the layers in the timeline or by moving the clip’s positions create a duplicate sequence under the edit menu. Re-name both sequences “Left” and “Right”.Under the “Left” sequence delete the bottom “Right Camera” layer.Under the “Right” sequence delete the top “Left C amera” .Now create a third sequence by dragging the “Right” sequence and dropping onto the New Item icon at the bottom of the Project Window.Rename this sequence “Composite”.The “Right” sequence should be on video channel one of the “Composite” sequence. Now drag the “Left” sequence on video channel two. We have effectively created two nested sequences each consisting of perfectly aligned and synced Left/Right video channels.Now we need to fit each stereo channel into the frame.

I’m working with an HD 1920×1080 pixel frame. Click on my “Left” layer and twirl down the motion effect under the effect window. Change both the position and anchor point “x” value to zero and reduce the scale width to 50. Uncheck the Uniform Scaling Checkbox to access the scale width.This squeezes our “Left” video onto the left side of the screen. Now do the same for the “Right” video layer. Click on the “Right” layer and under the effect window change the position and anchor point “x” value to 1920 and reduce the scale width to 50.There you go you now have your two offset video clips ready to upload. Just export the sequence as video and then upload to YouTube.Here are my settings I use to compress my sequence:Format – H.264 (creates an .mp4 file)Frame Size – 1920 x 1080 pixelsFrame Rate – 24fpsAudio Codec – AAC, Stereo, 48khzOnce compressed, go to YouTube and click upload.Under the Advanced Settings you’ll see a “3D Video” setting.Since this video is already a 3D video select that option from the drop down menu.Another drop down menu appears adding further fine-tuning to your video. Since we made a side-by-side video with the left video on the left side, select this option.And BINGO!Your 3D video is now ready to be viewed on YouTube complete with all of YouTube’s 3D features.Anaglyph Modes (Red/Cyan • Blue/Yellow • Green/Magenta)Polarized Interleaved and Side-by-Side (for 3D monitors and TVs)No Glasses Mode (Good Luck!)HTML 5 (Still in Beta Version)Now that’s exciting.You can always access the Advanced Settings after a video uploads by selecting the edit option for that videoOh, you may have noticed a curious option under the advanced settings 3D drop down menu.

This approximation can lead to image distortion, blurriness and inconsistent 3D depth. Trusting a true, Left/Right natural stereoscopic image will yield far superior results.YouTube isn’t the only one who uses this “post-conversion” method. Many apps, 3rd party plug-ins and major Hollywood blockbusters rely on “post-conversion” to keep the costs low and profits high. It is a novel and deterministic polishing technology for producing complex optics with figure accuracy 50 nm and surface roughness 1 nm. MR fluids are the key element of MRF technology. In general, MR fluids consist of uniformly dispersed noncolloidal magnetic particles, e.g., CI, in a carrier fluid. MRF was commercializedin 1997 by QED Technologies and is consideredto be an excellent, deterministic process for finishingFigure 1: The MRF Technology: A schematic(on the left)and an actual machine QED Q22-Y (on the right)MRF is a subaperture polishing process. For a conventionalMRF setup, the MR fluid is pumpedthrough a delivery system and ejected through a nozzlein the form of a ribbon onto a rotating verticalwheel. The ribbon stiffens upon passing into a regionwith a high magnetic field in the vicinity of the workpiece.The MRF removal function is characterized bya D-shaped polishing spot in the zone of contactbetween the ribbon and the workpiece, andthe material removal rate is determined by the timeof contact (e.g., dwell time) as well as other processand workpiece parameters. Temperature of theMR fluid is controlled by a chiller normally setto ~20 °C.2.

Latest DevelopmentsMore recently [ 2], zirconia-coated carbonyl-iron (CI) particle based magnetorheological (MR) fluid was developed at the LLE, University of Rochester using a sol-gel synthesis in kilogram quantities. Zirconia (ZrO2) is a hard polishing abrasive used in conventional polishing of hard and soft glasses. The coating layer is ~75 nm thick, faceted in surface structure, and well adhered. The zirconia coated magnetic CI particles (ranging typically in the ~0.5 to 2.0 µm range) show long-term stability against aqueous corrosion. Free nanocrystalline zirconia polishing abrasives are also cogenerated in the coating process, resulting in an abrasive-charged powder for MRF.This work revelaed that the zirconia-coated CI-based MR fluid was designed, prepared, and circulated in an experimental MRF platform for a period of nearly three weeks with no signs of degradation/corrosion. As a part of testing, a variety of optical glasses spanning a range of hardness values were tested, as well as several polycrystalline optical ceramics.3.

Project ObjectivesTwo types of CI particles were tested for this project, (a) Uncoated CI HQ particles (commercially available from BASF) and (b) Zirconia coated CI particles (produced at the LLE). All samples were in powder form and were milled using mortar and pestle before mounting on stubs for SEM. Sample preparation for the TEM involved the use of Isopropyl suspensions of the milled powder . Additionally, two other samples were prepared in form of pucks by mixing CI particles powder with conductive epoxy powder under controlled pressure and temperature. The pucks were polished using the MR Fluid STM in order to polish the particles and obtain their cross sections.Several techniques were used to examine these particles. These included using various imaging modes on the SEM, bright field imaging using the TEM, EDS analysis and FIB. One more technique, the generation of 3-D anaglyphs using stereo pair images in Adobe Photoshop CS5 was also used.Results DiscussionsThe project provided significant insight into the Zirconia coated particles - its surface morphology and thickness, the distribution of free zirconia within the sample and an idea of the nature of the coating deposited using this sol-gel technique. Focused Ion Beam milling, due to its very high precision is definitely one technique that will be essential in better characterizing the coated particles.

Better results using FIB were not possible for this project due to time constraints. Also, TEM micrographs revealed that the coating on these particles is probably amorphous in nature due to the lack of presence of crystal lattice at significantly high magnifications.Overall, Electron Microscopy proved to be a very effective means to characterize these particles and study their properties.2. 0 Print Designer Bundle $500 worth of value for... September 2013 CraigAn anaglyph image is one that has been specially prepared to provide a stereoscopic 3D effect when viewed using colored glasses. Anaglyph images actually two distinct pictures that have been “merged” into one single image. Each of these distinct pictures is slightly offset from each other in order to mimic the way our eyes see an image (each eye is slightly to the right or left of your other eye, giving us the ability to see two versions of the space in front of us at the same time). Once combined into a single image, each of these distinct pictures is “filtered” using one of two colors (usually red and blue) – ff you were to wear a set of glasses that contains lenses that matched the colored filters using in the image you would be able to see the image in 3D, since the lenses of the glasses will, in effect, supply a different image to each eye.In class I distributed standard 3D glasses that contain two different colored lenses – one red and one blue. Good luck on your Anaglyph extra credit assignment!Extruding objects into 3D space in PhotoshopCreating an Anaglyph 3D image using Photoshop (detailed)And here’s a quick overview on the basic steps to create an anaglyph image:Take two photographs that are horizontally separated by about 2 inches (i.e. take a picture and the move your camera about 2 inches to the right and take another picture). Note that your subject is very important – try and have objects that exist in the foreground, mid ground and background of the image. Try and keep your closest subject about 4 feet away from the camera.Open up both images in Photoshop.Copy both images into the same document. Name the layers “left” and “right” accordingly so you don’t forget which is which!Put the left image on top of the right image.Remove the Red component from the right image. You can do this using the Image - Adjustments - Levels window. Select the Red channel and type the number 0 into the box that says “Output Levels” (so that it outputs from 0 to 0 in the red channel)Do the same thing for the left image, but remove the green and blue channels.Click on your left image and set the Layer Mode to “screen” – the layer mode dropdown is at the top of the Layers panel.Put on your glasses!

Here’s how to get started if you’re interested in participating:Create an anaglyph from a photograph. This will require you to take two images that are slightly offset from one another and adjust them in Photoshop such that they appear 3D when viewed through a set of red / blue 3D glasses. DO NOT USE A SINGLE IMAGE TO MAKE THIS WORK – you need two images. If you try it with just one image you won’t get credit for this assignment.Create an anaglyph from Photoshop layers. Each layer will need to be adjusted accordingly in order to simulate the 3D effect.

You can do this by converting the layer to a 3D layer and then adjusting its stereo properties.Note that you might need to desaturate the image to deal with color issues (Image - Adjustments - Hue / Saturation — slide the saturation slider down to wring out some of the color in the image)Submit your work (PSD and JPG files, Zipped) to NYU Classes. Day 05 Wrap-UpToday we concluded our discussion of intermediate Photoshop concepts. Here’s a recap of what we discussed:Photoshop contains an impressive array of built-in filters that can be used to render a host of different effects. Filters can be applied to entire layers or specific selections on a layer. Photoshop designers routinely come up with ways in which filters can be combined to create unique effects.

Here’s a listing of useful filtering techniques that can get you started.To begin working with Filters you can click on the ‘Filters’ menu. In class we looked at the ‘Filter Gallery’ menu which lets you graphically experiment with all of the built-in Photoshop Filters.Remember that filters are applied to the currently selected layer only. You can also select a portion of a layer (using a selection tool such as the rectangular marquee tool) to apply a filter to a specific portion of a layer.We also talked about the ‘Convert for Smart Filters’ option under the Filters menu. This option lets you non-destructively apply filters to a layer. You can turn on and off filters by using the visibility toggles in the layers panel.We then moved on to talk about the ‘Liquify’ filter which allows you to apply different types of “warps” to an image. Liquify is available under the ‘Filters’ menu and opens up a new interface in which you can “pucker”, “bloat”, “twirl” and “shear” pixels within a scene.

Here’s an example that exaggerates the facial features of a model:We also talked about 3rd party filters that can be downloaded from a website and installed into your personal copy of Photoshop. The filter we discussed in class was the ‘Flood’ filter by Flaming Pear which lets you submerge an image.We then moved on to discuss brushes. Photoshop has a ‘Paint’ tool (8th tool down) that lets you draw on the canvas as though you were using a real-world paintbrush. The pain tool has a number of options that can be set using the properties bar along the top of the screen, including the brush shape, its opacity and how much digital paint to apply at any one time (called “flow”)We also discussed how Photoshop allows you to work with colors by way of the ‘Foreground’ and ‘Background’ color swatches at the bottom of the toolbar. These swatches pull up a robust color picker that lets you works with colors in a number of ways, including through Red Green Blue color space (RGB), Hue Saturation Brightness (HSB) and Cyan Yellow Magenta Black (CYMK).We talked about how the computer can use a series of 0′s and 1′s to quantify colors, and we experimented with inputting values into the R, G and B fields to show how to generate different types of colors. Remember that Photoshop generally uses 8 bits per channel, meaning that the #’s you enter into the RGB blanks should be between 0 and 255 since 8 bits can yield a maximum number of 256 distinct combinations (2^8 = 256)Next we went out to the web and explored how colors can be expressed as Hexadecimal color codes.

Hexadecimal, or Hex, is a number system that uses 16 as its base (as opposed to our base 10 number system or binary’s base 2 number system). Hex numbers go from 0-9 and then from A-F, yielding 16 possible “digits”. It just so happens that exactly two digits in Hex can represent 8 bits, so most colors on the web are expressed this way for simplicity’s sake. When reading a Hex color code you should break down the number into three portions to determine the amount of Red, Green and Blue present in the color. For example, “00FF00″ can be read as ’00′ Red, ‘FF’ Green and ’00′ Blue, making this color a pure shade of green. An incomplete listing of hex color codes can be found here.You can also determine the Hex color value of any pixel on your screen by using your computer’s built in Digital Color Meter.

This program, available on every Mac, can be found by going to the Spotlight at the top right side of the screen and searching for ‘Digital Color Meter’ – it allows you to isolate pixels on your screen and analyze them in terms of their RGB color value.We also talked about some web-based resources that let you work with colors in a more meaningful way. Colr.org lets you upload photos and extract color palettes from them, and Colorscehemedesigner.com lets you use an interactive color wheel to design color schemes based on a specific base color.Next we discussed the Text tool and how to add text into your projects. We also talked about Fonts and how to find and install new ones that you find on the web. Some sites we mentioned were dafont.com and 1001freefonts.com . Keep in mind that fonts can be adjusted using the Free Transform tool just like any other element of your composition. In addition, you can use the ‘Puppet Warp’ tool to stretch out letters of your font if you first convert your text layer to a ‘Smart Object’ (right click on the layer and select ‘Convert to Smart Object’The ‘Color Replacement’ tool lets you substitute one color for another in an image. It is useful for altering color values without having to worry about compensating for shadows and other environmental conditions that may make it hard to perfectly match a certain color.Photoshop has other retouching tools besides the “content aware fill” tool, including the ‘Clone Stamp’ tool that lets you take a digital ‘skin graft’ from one area of an image to fill in another area. This technique is useful for retouching old photographs and covering over regions of an image that need to be hidden.

The tool works by by setting a “target” region and then copying pixels from that space to another area of the screen.Photoshop also contains a similar tool called the ‘Healing’ brush which is exactly the same as the Clone Stamp but with the added feature of being able to “blend” the source and destination pixels together in a smoother way.This entry was posted in Digital Imaging, Photoshop on September 18, 2013 by Craig. Day 04 Wrap-UpWe started off by reviewing the various ways you can work with layers and selections inside Photoshop (see the Class 03 Wrap-up posting for a basic overview on how to get started.) Here are some additional layer and selection features we discussed during class today:You can toggle the visibility of a layer by clicking the little “eyeball” icon. We often use this to temporarily hide a layer that we might want to work with again in the future.You can lock a layer and prevent it from being changed by clicking on a layer and then on the “lock” icon.You can duplicate a layer by right-clicking on the layer and selecting “duplicate” – this will make a copy of the layer on top of the existing one. We often then make the original layer invisible so that we can always go back to it if necessary.You can move all content on a layer by clicking on the layer and then using the Move too (top tool in the toolbar)You can restack layers by dragging them into position in the Layer panel. Remember that layers on top of other layers will appear to be in front of them.You can name your layers by double clicking on them – when you have 500 layers this is very helpfulIf you want to combine the pixels on two or more layers you can select those layers (hold down the shift key to select multiple adjacent layers or the control key to select multiple non-adjacent layers) and then right-click and select Merge LayersYou can also link two or more layers by right=clicking and selecting Link Layers.

When you move content on any layer set up in this way you will also proportionally move content on any other layers that are linked to the layer being moved.Each layer has an opacity slider – this lets you set the transparency for pixels that live on that layer.Remember that only the PSD file format supports layers. As a designer you will almost always be using the PSD format for your own work – you can make web-deliverable versions of your files by saving copies of them as JPEG or PNG files.Pixels need to be selected before you can work with them in a meaningful way. You can select pixels by first selecting a layer in the Layers panel. Next, you can use one of the selection tools that we covered on Day 03 (rectangular marquee, polygonal lasso, quick selection tool, etc) to define a region. The “marching ants” will appear.

You can then use Edit - Copy to copy those pixels and then Edit - Paste to place them on a new layer (or into a new document)One tool we covered in class today was the Magic Wand tool. This tool is useful for selecting pixels of similar color. It’s often used to select a solid color background from an image – then you can use Select - Inverse to select the unselected pixels (the thing you want to actually select)Once you have made a selection and have moved those pixels to a new layer you can modify them using a number of transformation tools. These tools are all available under the Edit menu. In class we covered the Free Transform tool (Command-T) and the Edit-Transform sub-menu (for flipping an image vertically horizontally). We also demonstrated the Edit-Transform-Warp tool for stretching an image using a “mesh” overlay.We also discussed how you can refine a selection by using the Refine Edge button that appears on the Options panel every time you are working with a selection tool.

This button lets you smooth the edges of your selection before you copy them into a new layer.Next we moved on to talk about sources for digital images. Here are a few that were mentioned:Google Images ( Let’s you search for images by keyword. Be mindful of the size of the image that you are working with (the larger the image the better) – in addition, not all images that you find are in the public domain, meaning that you can’t just grab and image and use it in a project without the permission of the author.Flickr ( Flickr lets you search for images by keyword, but it also has a ‘Creative Commons’ (CC) filter which lets you find only images that have been legally released for use by other artists and designers. You can perform a CC search by clicking on the ‘Advanced’ search option.We talked about using the Mac operating system to take a screenshot using the Command-4 key combination. Simply hit Command-4 and draw a box around a region of the screen – when you release your mouse you will hear a “camera” sound and the image will appear as a PNG file on your desktop.We alko talked about Jing ( which not long allows you to take screenshots but also lets you record short video segments of what is happening on your screen.We also talked about the “Content aware fill” feature in Photoshop CS5 which lets you selectively erase portions of your image using “samples” from neighboring pixels. Here’s a great video that gives you an overview on how to get started:Finally we walked through an advanced demo that brought together a number of today’s topics, including selection, the Content-Aware fill tool and the Puppet Warp mesh.

Layers allow you to control the “depth” of a element in a digital image. Layers that appear at the top of the layer stack appear in front of layers below them. Photoshop displays layers within an image using the ‘Layers’ panel. You can turn on this panel by clicking on the ‘Window’ menu and then on the ‘Layers’ option.We began our discussion by looking at a Photoshop image that was already organized into layers ( click here to access that file).

In this file we discussed the following:Only PSD files support layers – files saved as JPG, GIF, PNG, etc. do not have the ability to retain layers.PSD files cannot generally be viewed on the web. If you want to share a PSD file you should save a copy of it as a JPG or PNG.You can use the ‘eyeball’ icon in the layers panel to make a layer visible or invisible.You can right-click on a layer and select ‘Layer Properties’ to rename the layer.You can right-click on a layer to duplicate it as well – this is useful if you would like to make a copy of the layer before you make a big change to it (and you’re not sure that you will be happy with the change you’re about to make!)You can delete a layer by selecting and clicking the backspace / delete key on your keyboard.You can only interact with content on a layer if that layer is selected. Simply click on the layer and the use the Move tool (top tool in the toolbar on the left side) to move the content on that layer.You can reorder layers by dragging and dropping them in the layer stack.You can merge layers into a single layer by selecting them (using the Command key), right-clicking and selecting the ‘Merge Layers’ option.Next we moved onto layer effects.We created a new image and drew some rectangles using the ‘Rectangle Tool’ (looks like a rectangle near the bottom of the toolbar).As rectangles were drawn they were automatically added to new layers.At the bottom of the layers panel is a small button that looks like the letters ‘fx’ – this is the Layers Effects button and brings up a dialog box that allows you to add in a number of effects to a layer, including drop shadows, embossing, inner and outer glows, etc. We explored the Drop Shadow effect in detail and talked about how Photoshop supports a ‘global light’ feature which allows you to coordinate the angle at which all drop shadows are applied to your objects.Our next topic involved combining elements from multiple images into a single image.We started off by opening up a deep-sea image and an image that contained a number of multicolored fish. Our goal was to extract the fish and place them into the underwater scene.To extract the fish we used a number of tools, including:The ‘Rectangular Marquee’ tool (second tool down) allows you to select a box-shaped region of the screen. From there you can copy and paste the image from the fish file into the underwater file.

This resulted in a fish coming over plus its white background.Next we used the ‘Lasso’ tool (third tool down). The Lasso allows you select pixels in a “free-hand” manner. It’s very difficult to use and almost always results in a choppy selection.We then moved on to the ‘Polygonal Lasso’ tool (third down as well). This tool lets you lay down ‘points’ around an image – every time you click you add a new point to your selection. Clicking on your first point will ‘close’ the selection.

This tool works very well but it can be a little tedious, especially for images that have lots of corners (but it is necessary at times!)Next we looked at the ‘Quick Selection’ tool which attempts to “guess” as to which pixels you wish to select. It’s pretty accurate and dramatically speeds up the selection process. You can adjust its sensitivity using the sliders on the tool properties bar at the top of Photoshop.The general procedure we used in moving images from one canvas to another was to use one of the selection techniques outlined above, click on Edit - Copy, switch to the destination canvas and click on Edit - Paste. The selected item will appear as its own layer at the top of the layer stack.Once we had our extracted image in the new canvas we used the Edit - Free Transform tool to adjust the item’s rotation, scale and orientation. We also used the ‘Move’ tool (first tool) to reposition the item on the screen.We also talked about how you could use the Warp tool (Edit - Transform - Warp) to “stretch” out an item using an draggable mesh.This entry was posted in Digital Imaging, Photoshop on September 16, 2013 by Craig. Day 02 Wrap-UpHere’s what we covered in class today:We began class by talking about general computer concepts — the slide deck I used is posted under the Lectures tab above.

Here’s a brief recap:We discussed how modern computers can only really do a very small number of things, and that everything “under the hood” works using a language called “binary”.Everything a computer does can be reduced to binary. There are just two “letters” in this language – “0″ and “1″. We call a single “0″ or “1″ a “bit”, and a collection of 8 bits is called a “byte”.1,000 bytes are referred to as a “kilobyte”1,000,000 bytes are referred to as a “megabyte”1,000,000,000 bytes are referred to as a “gigabyte”1,000,000,000,000 bytes are referred to as a “terabyte”Binary is not something that an average human being can understand, so we have developed “input devices” to translate human experiences into zeros and ones (such as keyboards, mice and microphones)In order to translate a computer’s internal world of zeros and ones into the “real world” we have developed “output devices” that convert binary information into more manageable forms (such as being displayed on a monitor, printed by a printer or played by a set of speakers)Next we moved on to talk about how a computer understands visual information. We talked about how a computer can interpret a group of zeros and ones as colors.We then moved on to talk about the two families of images – Bitmaps and Vectors.Bitmaps are exactly what they sound like – maps of bits that tell a computer how to color a series of pixels on the screen. When bitmaps get very large it gets very difficult to transfer them across the Internet due to the overwhelming number of bits that they contain.

We spoke about how we’ve gotten around this problem through the idea of “compression” – that is, using a procedure to remove information from an image to reduce its size while maintaining its integrity. The two types of compression we spoke about were “lossy” and “lossless”. Lossless compression allows you to remove information without permanently destroying it (GIF and PNG files). Lossy compression destroys information in order to reduce file size (JPEG files)Vectors use mathematical expressions to describe images (rather than maps of pixels). Vectors can be enlarged infinitely without becoming distorted, but they can’t easily handle extremely detailed images such as photographs.
