The source ofVRayToon is available as part of the V-Ray SDK. Note that VRayToon is not intended to be a fullNPR (non-photorealistic rendering) effect.

However, it may be useful in manycases. Why an atmospheric effect? There are several solutions for adding toon effects to 3d renderings for3ds Max; most of them function either as special materials (shaders) or asrender (post) effects. Each of these approaches has both advantages andlimitations.

VRayToon has been implemented as anatmospheric effect for several reasons:The implementation is very simple. Works with any geometry supported by V-Ray, including displacedobjects,VRayFur andVRayProxy objects, etc. Works with any camera type supported by V-Ray (spherical, fish-eyeetc). Works with any camera effects (depth of field and/or motion blur). Works with raytraced effects such as reflection and refraction.

Smooth and consistent outlines for intersecting objects. Creating a VRayToon atmospheric effectVRayToon can be created from theEnvironment dialog of 3ds Max. To create aVRayToon effect chooseRendering > Effects... from the 3ds Max main menu.

Then click theAdd... button and chooseVRayToon:Parameters BasicparametersLine color - this is the color of theoutlines. Pixels width - this is the width of theoutlines in pixels. World pixels width - this is the widthe ofthe outlines in world units. Lines closer to the camera will be thicker.

Opacity - opacity of the outlines. Normal threshold - this determines whenlines will be created for parts of the same object with varying surfacenormals (for example, at the inside edges of a box). A value of 0.0 meansthat only 90 degrees or larger angles will generate internal lines.

Highervalues mean that more smooth normals can also generate an edge. Dont setthis value to pure 1.0 as this will fill curved objects completely. Overlap threshold - this determines whenoutlines will be created for overlapping parts of one and the same object. Lower values will reduce the internal overlapping lines, while higher valueswill produce more overlap lines. Dont set this value to pure 1.0 as thiswill fill curved objects completely.

Do reflections/refractons - this willcause the outlines to appear in reflections/refractions as well. Note thatthis may increase render times. Trace bias - this parameter depends on thescale of your scene, it determines the ray bias when the outlines are tracedin reflections/refractions. MapsThis group of parameters allows the user to control the outlines usingvarious texture maps. Color map - a texture map for the outlinecolor.

Screen-mapped maps will work best. Maps with World XYZ mapping arealso supported, but may not work very well. Width map - a multiplier texture for theoutline width. Screen-mapped maps will work best.

This works similar to bump-mapping and willtake the gradient of the texture as direction for distortion. Note that highoutput values may be required for larger distortion. Using these options, youcan achieve different outlines for different objects in the scene. To dothis, you need to create several VRayToonatmospherics and include each object in one of them.

NotesVRayToon only provides outlines. You willneed to come up with your own cartoon-style materials (for example, usingfalloff maps etc or other third-party material plugins). VRayToon has no per-object settings; however,you can add several VRayToon atmospherics to thescene, each applied to a different set of objects through theInclude/exclude objects list. VRayToon will not work properly with objectsthat have their Cast Shadows property turnedoff.

In this example we are using contours from Laurel Hill Louisiana. 1. Open up 3ds Max and select file, import and navigate to your AutoCAD contour file and select open. 2.

The following menu pops up. Generally you will not have to rescale the data, but the option is available as well as some others. The default settings will usually suffice, simply select OK. 3.

At this point your contour linework will show up in the windows. You will need to select the lines and set their elevation via the Z Axis. Press h to open the selection window and select a contour, in this case the 210 ft elevation line. 4.

Then simply choose the select and move tool and go down to the cartesian plan corrdinate entries, and type in 210 into the Z Axis. Press Enter. 5. Repeat this process for all contours and their respective elevations. 6.

Once this is done, select all of the contours/objects and from the rollout on the right select the Create, then Geometry buttons and choose Compound Objects from the rollout menu below. 7. Select Terrain from the options and a terrain is created from your contour splines 8. You can also use the options under terrain to add color to the terrain, either manually or with the default settings. 3ds max provides a good preview of the terrain, but you should render it out to get an accurate view of it.
