Windows 8.1If you want to just download the installation media for a fresh reinstall of Windows 8.1, there’s a new option from Microsoft that can allow you to download that image without even entering your product key.And if you are completely reinstalling a Windows 8.0 PC you can use this 8.1 installation media with the same key from Windows 8.0, so there’s no reason not to do so. It even comes with Update 1 integrated.Simply download the Windows Installation Media Creation Tool, and then select the details about which version you want (Windows 8.1 or 8.1 Pro, etc), and then follow through the wizard to create your boot media. You can choose to put the boot media directly on a USB drive, or you can create an ISO for later use or to burn to a disc later. It’s as easy as that. Otherwise if you need to create a 8.0 boot disk for repair purposes, this is a good option. You may still need to perform a fresh reinstall of Windows 8 or 8.1 on a new PC to get rid of all that bloatware. Computer manufacturers can bake their bloatware into the refresh image so the Refresh and Reset options won’t eliminate it.Here’s the most important thing you need to know: Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have different product keys. That is, if you have a Windows 8 license and attempt to install Windows 8.1 with your Windows 8 product key, you’ll receive an “invalid product key” message. You must instead install Windows 8, provide your Windows 8 product key, and then update to Windows 8.1 from within Windows 8. Yes, the Windows 8.1 upgrade is free if you’re using Windows 8, so this is just unnecessary pain.Likewise, if you have a Windows 8.1 license, your Windows 8.1 key won’t work with a Windows 8 disc.
You’ll need Windows 8.1 installation media to use a Windows 8.1 product key.First, visit the Upgrade Windows with only a product key page on Microsoft’s website. Click the Install Windows 8.1 button if you have a Windows 8.1 product key or click Install Windows 8 if you have a Windows 8 product key.Open the downloaded .exe file and enter your Windows 8 or 8.1 product key. This tool will create installation media that matches your product key — so, if you have a Windows 8 Professional key, you’ll get Windows 8 Professional installation media. The tool will create 32-bit installation media on 32-bit PCs and 64-bit media on 64-bit PCs.Select Install by creating media and you’ll be able to choose between a USB flash drive or ISO file. The wizard will create a bootable USB drive or provide you with an ISO file you can burn to disc by right-clicking it and selecting the Burn disc image option. If you’re looking for Windows 8.1 Enterprise installation media, you can download a 90-day free trial of Windows 8.1 Enterprise.
Enter a legitimate product key to turn the trial version into a full, official version.Microsoft provides other software via the TechNet Evaluation Center. For example, you could download a trial version of Windows Server 2012 R2 and enter a legitimate product key to get the full version. Older versions of Windows are found in the Previous Versions section of the TechNet Evaluation Center.Image Credit: bfishadow on FlickrChris Hoffman said:Note: depending on the OEM version of Windows that you are running, you will sometimes have an issue using the OEM key with a retail version of Windows, but you can always install and then call Microsoft and get them to straighten it out and allow your copy to activate. The most important thing is that you have a valid license key. When I downloaded and installed Windows 7 retail over the copy of Windows 7 OEM (and a Norton trial, and an Office 2007 trial, and various HP media programs) that came with my computer, I went through various methods of trying to get things to work. I tried to use the key that was printed on my sticker, and I tried to use Speccy to read what my OEM copy reported its Product Key as being.
No luck, but after some searching I found that Activation Backup Restore might do the trick. I restored the OEM copy from recovery discs, ran and stored the program in Dropbox, installed the retail copy, ran the software again, and was home free. Unfortunately it doesn't look like there's a version for Windows 8/8.1, but there are apparently other ways of going about it.Chris Hoffman said:This isn’t an officially supported way to get Windows 7 installation media — Microsoft won’t recommend this trick — but it’s worked for years. However, I could not activate a Windows Starter, using the key in the OEM sticker, after doing a clean install in a netbook. This has been the only exception. About using a Windows 8 key to activate Windows 8.1, I have read that is it possible to install 8.1 using a KMS code and then activate it with a Windows 8 key but havent tried it by myself. By the way, the Windows 8.1 downloaded by the method described here, does no finish the installation (it said that cannot copy some files). I tried with retail and MSDN images and they worked OK.
Conclusion, there is an issue with the 'Upgrade image' of Windows 8.1.@geekThat's an interesting question. It's the RTM Version of 8 Pro which MS let one download for $15 bucks to kick off introduction a couple of years ago.I made an ISO USB Stick so I could Clean Install and found I had to use the trick above on every installation. My ISO will clean install and activate automatically on multiple machines using the Same PID when I use the trick.Free Upgrades to Version 8.1 and Refresh are done through the MS Store which always works and are no problems as they always appear.I had a small mess up with 8.1 Refresh and WMI this past week but that was my fault as I didn't prepare Hyper-V for the update which I subsequently fixed.

How to clean install Windows 10 directly without upgrade .
By Martin Brinkmann on August 30, 2015 in Windows - Last Update: August 30, 2015 49The official way to upgrade an existing computer system to Windows 10 is to upgrade it while it is still installed on the computer. Some users prefer to do a clean install instead which, according to Microsoft, does not work directly if you have upgrade media (for instance by using the free in first year offer)Clean installs are useful if you want to start anew, or if you don't have access to the old operating system anymore. If you follow Microsoft's instructions, you would have to install the old operating system first before running the upgrade. To get a clean install, you'd have to install Windows 10 anew after that upgrade process.A user on Reddit discovered a method that improves that process significantly. Basically, it enables you to clean install Windows 10 directly provided that you still have access to the previous version of Windows.Install Windows 10 from scratchTip: Before you run this operation, make sure to backup the existing Windows installation so that you can restore it should things go wrong. Here is what you need to do to clean install Windows 10 on a computer system. You need a Windows 10 DVD or ISO image for that. If you don't have one get it from here. Download the tool from Microsoft's website to create the ISO image. Make sure you pick the right architecture and version.Burn the ISO, mount it or extract it.Navigate to the folder Windowsx64sources or P:Windowsx32sources and dragdrop the file gatherosstate.exe to the desktop.Run the file afterwards. It creates GenuineTicket.xml on the desktop. This file is needed so copy it to a USB drive or other location.Run a clean install of Windows 10 afterwards on the system.
Make sure you skip the product key.Once you are done and in Windows 10, copy the file GenuineTicket.xml to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsClipSVCGenuineTicket. The folder is hidden by default. If you cannot see it, select File Options View Show hidden files, folders and drives in File Explorer.Reboot the PC.The next time you boot into Windows 10 it should be fully activated. You can verify that easily with a tap on Windows-Pause. This opens the System Control panel and the system's activation status at the bottom of the page. This method improves the installation process for users who want to clean install Windows 10 as they don't have to upgrade their existing system first before they can run the clean install. It saves them the upgrade processSince you need to run the file on an existing system, it won't work if you don't have access to the system you want to upgrade from anymore. (via Deskmodder, Reddit)Now Read: essential software for Windows 10I’m not sure this works for upgrades from say win 7 but this has worked for my win 10 preview 3 times and you need an account for the preview. All I have done is wipe my c drive then install the newest version of win 10 preview do not insert a key when prompted after that I get a login screen I insert my login info and it finishes the install completely. Now it shows its activated but will still need verification it’s you so go to were you check activation there should be a button asking verification go through the steps asked you then get a verification email with a verification number insert the number and all is good. Not sure that this is even necessary, since when I just did an upgrade install (using a usb copy of the ISO I downloaded, before the confirmation, there was an option to confirm what you are going to keep.
It allowed me to change the default of keep files and programs (i.e. update) to keep NOTHING, which I assume is a clean install - at least on this tablet (with only 32GB SSD it looks that way. I had to supply a separate Flash drive for storage during the upgrade, but so far, it looks clean...I think I saw this same sort of upgrade option another time too...I don't remember the exact error it shot out, but something to do with the processor, I think. I'm not even certain a clean install will work, but I figure it's worth a shot. I actually tried to upgrade the PC again yesterday (it's my in-laws so it had been a while), in the end it just said it was incompatible and gave me a link to learn more... which took me to a system spec site (MS), listing the necessary specs to run Win 10. All seemed right, but I'm not an expert (nor completely ignorant)... ) I was just confused about where that file is. I already have installation media, next time we're out, I'll give it a go.Thanks for the post!In that situation you should already have formatted and reinstalled Windows 7 from scratch. At best you cannot guarantee a lot more is corrupt and not being able to do updates will leave it at risk of infection with malware. At worst, it might be caused by already being infected with malware.Either way, I would be checking the HDDs condition (which may also be why it corrupted) via the HDD manufacturers tools and getting it wiped and reinstalled. If their tools require Windows you might need to do the latter first as no doubt they wil need admin rights.I LOVE YOU!
This worked beautifully. I've been fighting with it for ages.I had originally upgraded from 8.1 to 10, which activated. I wanted to install 10 on a new drive but that refused to activate, until this little trick! So I can confirm that this works from an existing upgrade Windows 10 to a clean installation (the guide was for Windows 8). I booted to my activated upgrade installation, ran the exe, copied the xml file to my new installation, and voila!Thank you so much. Just saved me 5 hours of reinstalling two OSes and all my apps.Mission accomplished with Win 10 Pro as clean install, activated, AND as a dual boot with Win 7 Pro on same drive. Method described here worked perfectly to activate however, BEFORE generating the GenuineTicket.xml on the Win 7 partition, I ran 'Slmgr /ato' from admin command prompt on the Win 7 machine . This was done based on another tip and as I understood it, its purpose was to convert the Win 7 license into a Win 10 license.
Not 100% sure that this was necessary, but that is what I did. It is also important to realize that 'gatherosstate.exe' must be run from Win 7, not Win 10.Also, successfully dual booted another clean install of Win 10 with XP, but I guess I can forget about activation unless I buy a new license. Everything seems to be fully operational, though, except maybe Personalization --- but who cares? Anyone know what happens for sure after 30 days or one year? I tried copying the GenuineTicket.xml that was previously generated, but for sure, it must be machine specific. Thanks for the original post.Fred KNJ

Official Tool to Download Windows 8.1 Setup ISO and Create Installation Media .
*i*m*g*Official Tool to Download Windows 8.1 Setup ISO and Create Installation MediaWe know that Microsoft didn't provide offline ISO files of Windows 8.1 operating system for public download. If you use Windows 8 and want to upgrade to Windows 8.1, you'll need to download and install Windows 8.1 using Windows Store. Some people want to perform a clean installation of Windows 8.1 operating system in their computers, but they can't because there is no official place to download Windows 8.1 setup ISO files. So first they'll need to install Windows 8 and then upgrade it to Windows 8.1 which would not be a clean installation of Windows 8.1.Although there are a few workarounds to grab offline ISO files of Windows 8.1 as mentioned in following tutorial:How to Download Windows 8.1 RTM Standalone Offline ISO for Clean Installation? But now there is no need to use any workaround as Microsoft has released a free official tool to download Windows 8.1 setup ISO and create its installation media. You can use this tool to save Windows 8.1 ISO file to your computer and then create bootable USB flash drive or bootable DVD to install Windows 8.1 in any computer. You can download and run this tool in any Windows version but you'll require Internet connection as it downloads full ISO file of Windows 8.1 operating system. It allows you to select your desired language, Windows 8.1 edition and system architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).It can be used to download following editions of Windows 8.1 OS:Windows 8.1Windows 8.1 ProWindows 8.1 NWindows 8.1 Pro NWindows 8.1 Single LanguageYou can download 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) version of any Windows 8.1 edition according to your requirements.Once you select the required details, it asks you whether you want to create a bootable USB flash drive of Windows 8.1 or want to save the setup ISO file of Windows 8.1 for later use.You should select the 2nd option to save ISO file and then after downloading and saving the ISO file, you can create a bootable flash drive or burn it to a DVD using built-in Disc Burner program of Windows or any 3rd party disc burning utility. How to Create Bootable USB Drive of Windows Setup without Using Any Software? The Best FREE Alternatives to Nero CD / DVD Burning SoftwareIn this way, you'll always have a backup of Windows 8.1 setup ISO file for future use.You can download this free tool using following link:Download Windows 8.1 Installation Media Creation ToolWhen you'll try to install Windows 8.1 using bootable USB drive or DVD created with the help of this tool, you can use either Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product key at the time of installation. Both are accepted.PS: It seems the downloaded ISO file includes Windows 8.1 Update 1 i.e. its a slipstreamed Windows 8.1 ISO file with Update 1. That's a good news for people who were planning to install Windows 8.1 operating system. Thanks to gHacks for sharing this tool...Share this article: Facebook | Twitter | Google+ | Reddit | Tell a friendPosted in: Software, Windows 8 / 8.1Other similar articles that may interest youMaster Tutorial to Make Windows 10 Super FastMetroBackUp: Free Utility with Metro UI to Keep Directories in SyncVize (XPize for Vista): GUI Enhancer for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008[FIX] Windows Vista or Server 2008 Computer Hangs and Stops Responding While Applying User Settings at Login ScreenHow to Install and Use Custom 3rd Party Themes in Windows?Download Windows Vista Blue Skin “Y! I have HP envy j048tx and really want to upgrade from Win8 to Win8.1 .surajCan i pause it while downloading ?Vidyasagar [email protected] Vashistha, I want to clear that you have to download this ISO using this media after that you have to make bootable pen drive or DVD (Software are here to download ) and choose UEFI format. And it will not replace your recovery drive. For further installation of Windows 8.1 you have to do this things everytime from your Downloaded ISO fie. And your recovery drive become useless you can format it because you have Original Downloaded Windows 8.1 ISO file. Keep your Downloaded ISO file safe for further format in future. After format of your Windows you have to download and install driver for your Laptop also.Driver are here h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4158lc=encc=indlc=ensw_lang=product=5448970Alianits quite slowLucasHello! Since i bought laptop without integrated operating system, will the clean installation of Windows 8.1 Pro (or any version that this tool provide) require activation key from me during installation ? Will it activate automaticaly via internet, after the installation is done ? Thanks in advance !VG^^ Of course.
You'll require a genuine product key.Walt PowellI can't believe MS finally released this... Definitely overdue.XSSI disagree with the statement that you can use your window 8 key for the windows 8.1 download using the Windows 8.1 media creator. I have seen this same statement said elsewhere and it is false.I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Single Language and try to run it, and if my key was accepted it would not ask me, and it asks me every time. I entered my OEM key and it doesn't work and I had to use the GEneric Windows 8.1 Single Language key to get pass the Product Key page, then when the installation was all done, and I logged into desktop, I Put my windows 8 OEM key in, and it activated.XSSPS I too, tried to make a USB Disk, and my disk was 4GB and yet this media downloader/creator program said that It was too small. No other uSB creator program says that about this same USB drive. The USB drive it won't accept is KINGSTON DATA TRAVELER 4 GB USB 2.However, It worked great on my USB 8gb PNY, and booted.
I even used other programs that booted it successfully. The easiest way to use it, is download the ISO and mount it and run it.If you kill the program before you burn a DVD, and not click finish, you will end up with and ISO and a hidden ESDwindows setup folder on C drive.VG^^ Please check following:http://www.askvg.com/fix-windows-8-genuine-product-key-doesnt-work-for-w... need to first use a generic product key and then you can use your Windows 8 key to activate Windows.Peter QWon't work if you're behind a firewall activate windows 8.1 enterprise 64 bit. Besides why download an app to download an ISO, why not directly link to the ISO? People who are looking for ISO's know how to mount them and make bootable USB's. I bought an Onda v116w from China and my windows build is Chinese, a single language edition. I cant read Chinese but getting it to boot from the SD drive should be straight forward. I'm assuming my Chinese Windows key will work.MattIs it legal to just download all of the ISOs provided for future use? I only have Windows 8.1 machines, but I'd like to keep Win 8.1 Pro ISOs as well just in case.BobWhere can I get an ISO for 8.0 pro? You can't upgrade from 7 to 8.1 (or W10) without losing all your programs. Going from 7 to 8.0 to 8.1 will keep your programs. I've had some strange problems with Windows Store and with an HP Printer, and after trying many obvious things I have run sfc and DISM. Windows 8.1 Tip: Upgrade from Windows 8 Enterprise .
*i*m*g*With Windows 8.1 generally available, those with Windows 8 Enterprise have noticed that they cannot upgrade their OS to the new version using the normal Windows Store-based installer. Here's what you need to know to get upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise.First, and most generally, Windows 8 Enterprise is blocked from using the Store updater for good reason: Enterprise is rolled out to users in controlled corporate environments only, and the admins and IT pros in those environments will determine when—if—that upgrade occurs. There's no switch or whatever that I'm aware of that will overcome this limitation. You can read Windows 8.1 Upgrade Guide: Electronic Upgrade Options and Windows 8.1 Upgrade: Step-By-Step for more information about using the Store-based installer. But what you're concerned with, as a Windows 8 Enterprise user, of course, is how you can get the upgrade.According to Microsoft, those with Windows 8 Enterprise can download Windows 8.1 Enterprise media from the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC). This media, which is delivered in the form of an ISO file, can be used to perform an in-place update from an existing Windows 8 Enterprise installation: Just burn it a DVD or copy to a USB key for installation.( Note: If you acquired Windows 8 Enterprise from TechNet and MSDN, you can of course use your subscription to grab Windows 8.1 Enterprise now and perform the upgrade in a similar fashion.)From an admin and IT pro perspective, corporate environments can use this ISO to deploy the upgrade to users via the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2013 or System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager. These environments will also need to update their existing Key Management Service (KMS) server and get new KMS keys from the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) to activate Windows 8.1.For those interesting in checking out Windows 8.1 Enterprise, Microsoft is offering a 90-day Evaluation version. And for more information about this product version, be sure to visit the Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation Resources site.Paul did you actually test this? I spent hours and hours reading every where and trying different scenarios and ISO to upgrade windows 8.0 to windows 8.1 enterprise and keep all files, apps, settings. I don't think it's possible, even MSFT support could not answer this.
They said in their manual it says it should be possible but the option is not there when you are installing. This is what I get (not my site just as ref)So I can update from windows 7 enterprise to 8.0 no problem, works great actually. Then even if I did a clean install of 8.0 enterprise I can not upgrade and keep apps to 8.1.So the only option I had was to install a clean copy of 8.1 and re-install all apps and settings.Login or register to post comments@ taingallsInteresting. I would expect both retail versions of 8.1 Pro and 8.1 Enterprise to have stand-alone 8.1 keys, whereas it is logical for the update images to activate from the 8.0 key. Can't say for sure, but looks like there is just one version of 8.1 Enterprise (no specific upgrade version), hence the requirement for a new 8.1 key as opposed to a continuation of the 8.0 Enterprise key into 8.1 Enterprise. Microsoft is somewhat schizoid on 8.1 in all its forms, it seems to me, with the company providing free upgrades to 8.0 purchasers, but at the same time treating 8.1 as a new and entirely separate OS requiring a new activation key. Too many chiefs running around in Redmond these days, maybe...?Login or register to post commentsLike many, I was hoping to see a new Lumia flagship before the end of 2014, and while I was pleasantly surprised in some ways by both the Lumia 735 and 830, neither offers the level of performance or best-in-market camera quality I had come to expected from Microsoft/Nokia's high-end devices.
So I pulled the trigger on an unlocked Windows Phone flagship that will hopefully take me through at least the first half of this year. Or until Microsoft gets off its low-end fixation and satisfies the needs of its biggest fans.... More
What’s the difference between the Windows 8 Pro, VL and N versions? .
If you count all the Windows 8 32bit and 64 bit versions along with the Pro and Enterprise editions, there ends up being a dizzying array of versions. This is confusing, especially as you’re considering which version to buy based on offered features. The VL means Volume License which means a single copy can be activated multiple times with a unique key. Usually, Windows 8 Enterprise is sold under the VL type but it’s not impossible for Windows 8 Pro to share the same designation. The N means Windows doesn’t have Windows Media Player so you’ll need to buy it separately if you want it. But, to be honest, with free players like VLC player that supports almost every codec known to man, it doesn’t make sense to purchase Windows 8 Pro N just to get Windows Media Player. This is how the Windows 8 version break down:Windows RTWindows 8Windows 8 ProWindows 8 EnterpriseWindows RT is installed on the Microsoft Surface tablet. Since it’s built for tablets it doesn’t have all the features of the other Windows editions. For example, it only has a partial desktop, only supports Windows Store Apps, doesn’t come with Windows Media Player and can’t join a corporate domain. On the positive side, Surface does comes bundled with Microsoft Office and despite a $900 million dollar write down on the tablet, Microsoft is allegedly working on a faster, sleeker Surface tablet called the Surface 2.Windows 8, without any suffixes, is what most people have in mind when considering Windows 8. This is what’s known as the Core or Basic edition of Windows and is aimed at the home market. The majority of consumers will purchase Windows 8 Core.. Unless you’re buying Windows 8 for your company or prefer the Surface tablet, you’ll want this version of Windows.
The upgrade is currently $119.99 USD.Windows 8 Pro is analogous to Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate. Businesses and gadget geeks will buy this edition so they can use integrated features such as Remote Desktop, Group Policy and BitLocker,Windows 8 Enterprise is geared toward businesses like Pro but also contains extra features such as BranchCache and Windows To Go to help IT departments organize their Microsoft assets. You should start by enrolling in that grade then, the sooner the better. The author’s mistake was two-fold. Firstly, Snazzy Snook is right, he contradicts himself by both saying N versions have and don’t have Media Player. What? A quantum OS!
Secondly, it would have been much better to explain things plainly and let the user decide what is worth doing or not doing, for example: Microsoft was required to create the “N” editions of Windows after the European Commission ruled in 2004 that it needed to provide a copy of Windows without Windows Media Player tied in.

Windows 10 Home .
Rated 1 out of 5 by rcatlanta67 from A great disappointment... the upgrade was very quick to completely degrade the machine with the 100% disk usage issue, and when one searches online including MS support resources, there are so many suggested fixes. I had to re-install 10 with a boot disk. One does not expect such poorly built OS release from Microsoft. This install was on a VAIO bought from sony rewards site - that sent the machine preloaded with Windows 7, but no disk. Now, I cannot validate the product code for a Windows 7 download from MS - because it was preloaded. What rubbish!Rated 4 out of 5 by bobbyjr81 from Great with clean a install only I attempted to upgrade my HP laptop from windows 7 to 10 but while upgrading the computer froze displaying a circle with the number 2 inside the circle. Both repair centers claimed my hard drive was dead and unable to boot windows 7 again but I managed to buy a data transfer cable and back up my files to an external hard drive.
I bought a hard drive and did a clean install and thus far windows 10 has been superb on this new HDD. Unfortunately because the upgrade damaged my hard drive with windows 7 I don't have a product key to activate windows 10. I hope they fix it but I would tell anyone to do a clean install on a new hard drive with windows 10. It is awesome but it would be better if I was able to get a product key since the upgrade damaged my hard drive.Rated 5 out of 5 by DonaldSMCSE from Great New OS Did an upgrade from Windows 7 SP1 64bit and everything worked as it should have. Had no problems with activation. Made a Windows 10 Home 64bit DVD and then did a total clean install and the software Activated just like it should.
Most problems are happening because people are doing a clean install first and not upgrading and then formatting and doing a clean install. You have to do the upgrade first so your system is recognized by the Microsoft Servers. From there you just format your drive and reload and everything works fine. This is a full version of Windows 10 we recommend you back up your files before installing. This edition contains features aimed at the home market segment and provides all of the basic new Windows 8 features. Windows 8 Pro Windows 8 Pro is comparable to Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate[3 ][4 ] and is targeted towards enthusiasts and business users it includes all the features of Windows 8. Additional features include the ability to receive Remote Desktop connections, the ability to participate in a Windows Server domain, Encrypting File System, Hyper-V, and Virtual Hard Disk Booting, Group Policy as well as BitLocker and BitLocker To Go. Windows Media Center functionality is available only for Windows 8 Pro as a separate software package.[5 ] Windows 8 Enterprise Windows 8 Enterprise provides all the features in Windows 8 Pro (except the ability to install the Windows Media Center add-on), with additional features to assist with IT organization (see table below).[3 ] This edition is available to Software Assurance customers, as well as MSDN and Technet Professional subscribers, and was released on 16 August 2012.[6 ] Windows RT Windows RT is only available pre-installed on ARM-based devices such as tablet PCs.[7 ] It includes touch-optimized desktop versions of the basic set of Office 2013 applications to users— Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, and supports device encryption capabilities. Several business-focused features such as Group Policy and domain support are not included. Software for Windows RT can be either downloaded from Windows Store or sideloaded, although sideloading on Windows RT must first be enabled by purchasing additional licenses through Microsoft volume licensing outlet.[8 ][9 ] Desktop software that run on previous versions of Windows cannot be run on Windows RT[10 ] as Windows Store apps are based on Windows Runtime API which differs from the traditional apps.[8 ] According to CNET, these essential differences may raise the question of whether Windows RT is an edition of Windows: In a conversation with Mozilla, Microsoft deputy general counsel David Heiner was reported to have said Windows RT isn't Windows anymore. Mozilla general counsel, however, dismissed the assertion on the basis that Windows RT has the same user interface, application programming interface and update mechanism.[11 ]Unlike Windows Vista and Windows 7, there are no Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, or Ultimate editions.[12 ] Regional restrictions and variations [ edit ]All mentioned editions have the ability to use language packs, enabling multiple user interface languages.[4 ] (This functionality was previously only available in Windows 7 Ultimate or Enterprise.) However, in China and other emerging markets, a variation of Windows 8 without this capability, called Windows 8 Single Language, is sold. This edition can be upgraded to Windows 8 Pro.[13 ]Additional Windows 8 editions specially destined for European markets have the letter N (e.g.
Windows 8.1 Enterprise N) suffixed to their names and do not include a bundled copy of Windows Media Player. Microsoft was required to create the N editions of Windows after the European Commission ruled in 2004 that it needed to provide a copy of Windows without Windows Media Player tied in. Upgrade compatibility [ edit ]The following in-place upgrade paths are supported from Windows 7.[3 ] Note that it is only possible to upgrade from an IA-32 version of Windows 7 to an IA-32 version of Windows 8 an x64 version of Windows 7 can only be upgraded to an x64 version of Windows 8. It is possible to upgrade Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista to Windows 8 Pro. The retail package entitled Windows 8 Pro Upgrade is restricted to upgrading a computer with licensed Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista or Windows 7.
